Defect-free, single atomic, and quasi-one dimensional nanowires are formed on a Pt/Ge(001) surface. Using reflection high-energy positron diffraction (RHEPD), we have reported that the Nano-Wire (NW) model explains the fundamental structure of the observed nanowires. Recently, it has been reported that the nanowires undergo a Peierls transition below 80 K. We have studied about the phase transition phenomenon using RHEPD and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The RHEPD spot intensity of the one-beam rocking curve at RT increases compared to that at 35 K. According to the analysis with a dynamical diffraction theory, the change of the rocking curves implies the structural phase transition due to the height difference of the topmost Ge dimer atoms in the low-temperature phase, while that disappears in high-temperature. The ARPES results also show that the phase transition is caused by the concerted lattice distortion accompanying the formation of charge density waves.

no journal, ,

Heusler alloys are anticipated as promissing spin-injection electrode materials. In its evaluation, half-metallicity and spin-polarization are important factors. In our previous studies, spin-polarized positron annihilation spectroscopy (SP-PAS) is found to be useful for studying electronic state of ferromagnet. In this study, we performed SP-PAS measurements for a few Heusler alloys (Co$$_{2}$$MnAl, Co$$_{2}$$MnSi, NiMnSb). Consequently, we found that the majority spin band of Co$$_{2}$$MnAl has a d-like character, while those of Co$$_{2}$$MnSi and NiMnSb have sp-like characters. These findings are consistent with what expected from a band calculation.

Positronium formation observed by AMOC

Hirade, Tetsuya; Oka, Toshitaka*

no journal, ,

Room temperature ionic liquids (IL) are liquids consisting of ions. Negligible vapor pressure and other interesting properties are considered to be caused by the ionic nature. There are many considerable applications of ionic liquids. One of the reasons is their environmentally friendly property. It is expected to use for nuclear fuel reprocessing. The radiation chemistry study for IL is very important. The solvation of excess electrons is affected by molecular dynamics in sub-nano meter scale. Positronium (bond state of electron and positron) has a negative work function and form a bubble in liquids. The formation time is usually very fast as about 1ps that is difficult to observe by experiment. However we succeeded to observe the bubble formation process by the positron annihilation age-momentum correlation (AMOC) measurement. We found that the bubble formation time was about 100ps in IL.

Using heavy-ion microbeam system of JAEA-Takasaki, we irradiated brain of the embryos of the Medaka with carbon ion microbeam. After irradiation, inductions of apoptosis were observed using whole-mount staining of acridine orange. In targeted position of the brain, we observed the induction of radiation induced apoptosis, indicating that the system can irradiate specific region of the brain of the Medaka embryo.
